Australia Drops Blunt Truth About Prediction Markets: ‘You’re Likely to Lose Money’

The public is being reminded by Australia that prediction markets are not authorized as financial exchanges and that users of these international trading platforms should prepare to lose money.

The Australian government's Moneysmart website, run by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), assists customers in making wise financial decisions.

Moneysmart draws attention to the alleged risks of trading on the results of future events in a notice released on Monday, August 3.

Fundamentally, prediction markets enable the purchase and sale of shares associated with future events and commodities, including sports.

According to an ASIC review, 75% of retail traders lost money when trading binary options, according to the Moneysmart public service announcement.

Serious Caution

According to Moneysmart executives, trading on prediction markets is not a wise financial decision.

“Growing interest in prediction markets overseas, including for entertainment and sports events, has driven increased trading activity and public attention. However, the reality is that you are more likely to lose money than make money,” the website says.

Prediction market trading carries a number of hazards, according to ASIC, one of which is that the majority of event contracts are "all or nothing," meaning that losing your entire investment is one possible outcome.

A prediction market contract on tomorrow's high temperature in Sydney has an all-or-nothing conclusion, in contrast to a commodity position, like gold, which can vary in value but is very unlikely to become worthless. The contract expires with no value if the desired temperature is not reached.

Retail traders may be wagering against someone with insider or private knowledge, according to ASIC.

Traders are not protected by Australian financial services legislation or government-backed dispute resolution because no prediction market is authorized to operate in Australia.

Forecasting Markets for Investing

According to prediction markets, traders can profit from their knowledge and insight.

Prediction markets allow consumers to make fictitious investments on anything from the Los Angeles Dodgers' chances of winning the World Series to the election of the next US president, so it is no longer necessary to have economic acumen to make money on Wall Street.

However, many detractors claim that prediction market trading is more akin to betting than investing because of the all-or-nothing result.

Citing evidence indicating that only a tiny number of "whales" routinely make money on the exchanges, Bank of America recently issued a warning that the growth of prediction markets could result in an increase in consumer debt and bad loans.

Concerns about prediction markets' "easy access and gamified interfaces that encourage frequent and impulsive wagers" were also brought up in the note.
